Business as usual during a national blackout: How Lleida.net guaranteed uninterrupted service

Lleida.net blackout business continuity is not just a concept—it became a reality on 28 April 2025, when Spain faced the largest power outage in its modern history...

Strategic planning and team commitment ensured uninterrupted services despite the national power outage

The successful activation of our Business Continuity Plan (BCP), combined with the unwavering dedication of our team, allowed Lleida.net to maintain full-service availability during the major blackout that hit mainland Spain on 28 April 2025..

Despite the widespread disruption, our systems operated at 100% capacity. “Even with the scale of the incident, we managed to carry on as normal,” said Jordi Ramon Piñol, CTO of Lleida.net. “It was the result of thorough analysis, careful forecasting and planning — both in terms of infrastructure and people — to handle adverse scenarios.”

Spain’s worst blackout tested Lleida.net business continuity

The power cut left over 55 million people without electricity for more than 12 hours. Like the rest of the country, it caught us by surprise — but we were ready.

This event highlighted the importance of having a strategic foresight and a resilient operational structure. In such moments, preparation and commitment become tangible values. Many of our employees continued working, even after hours, to monitor systems and guarantee real-time service stability.

Here’s how we ensured 100% service availability.

Immediate activation of the BCP (Business Continuity Plan)

At Lleida.net, scenarios like this had already been contemplated. As part of our commitment to business continuity and information security, and following ISO 27001 standards, we immediately activated our Business Continuity Plan (BCP).

This plan is designed to ensure the continuity of operations during critical incidents such as cyberattacks, natural disasters, fires, or other high-impact events. This event truly tested our Lleida.net blackout business continuity strategy and proved its strength in real time. Every action is clearly outlined, and while it may have seemed like a protocol we’d never need, being prepared proved essential: “It enabled us to keep all services running smoothly, without interruption.”

Lleida.net blackout business continuity: our real-time response

At 12:30 p.m., the lights suddenly went out in Lleida.net’s headquarters. Moments later, power was restored to our facilities, while the rest of the country was still in chaos.

Our backup power system was activated without any issues, supplying the necessary energy for an extended period. Energy-saving and low-consumption measures were also put in place.

Guaranteed connectivity during the blackout

Because Lleida.net operates with several redundant and dedicated internet lines, our connectivity was never affected.

Even under extreme conditions, our network infrastructure remained stable and robust.

Trust is built during times of crisis

Activating our protocols didn’t result in any service degradation. On the contrary — it confirmed the reliability of our operations and our commitment to maintaining a secure infrastructure, regardless of external challenges.

Thanks to a combination of planning, technology and human effort, we ensured uninterrupted services with no impact on our clients. The Lleida.net blackout business continuity case proves that preparation, infrastructure and people are the foundation of digital trust.

Blowing Out the Candles for Lleida.net’s 30th Anniversary

Blowing Out the Candles for Lleida.net’s 30th Anniversary

Lleida.net’s 30th anniversary takes us back to 1995, when the internet was still an enigma for most. Thirty years later, we haven’t just observed our clients' digital transformation—we’ve helped shape it.

As we mark our 30th anniversary, we do so at the pinnacle of our journey so far: Q1 2025 has delivered the strongest financial performance in our company’s history. With €5.29 million in revenue—up 12% year-on-year—and an EBITDA of €1.22 million, this success highlights the strength of Lleida.net’s 30th anniversary year.

It’s a fitting achievement in a year when we’ve firmly cemented our position as one of Spain’s most prominent trusted electronic service providers. Our proprietary technology portfolio empowers remote interactions between businesses and end customers, offering varying levels of legal certainty tailored to each communication. From simple, lower-evidence SMS notifications
to services with the highest level of legal robustness, such as issuing qualified digital certificates compliant with EU eIDAS regulations, on par with those from Spain’s national authority, FNMT.

We take pride in developing all our technology in-house. This independence has always been central to our identity and allows us to deliver every service without relying on third parties. It also gives us tighter quality control, cost efficiency, agile client adaptation, and secure data management.

Growing globally. Innovating boldly.

In 2024, we launched an ambitious cost-control and commercial growth strategy, backed by a refreshed brand identity: a bolder colour palette, new team structures, and a renewed push for innovation reflected in our expanding patent portfolio. We’re building bridges between the past and the future— a strategy that’s already bearing fruit as we celebrate this milestone year.

“When we launched our Recovery Plan in November 2023, we knew we had work ahead of us—restoring market position and shareholder trust,”says our CEO, Sisco Sapena.

'We’ve always been an innovation-driven company.'

'Innovation has always been part of who we are. Reaching the best results in our history this quarter proves that we chose the right path, and we’re just getting started. Reaching the best results in our history this quarter demonstrates that we chose the right path , and we’re just getting started.' - Sisco Sapena, CEO.

Robust performance across all business lines

All business lines showed stable performance, with two areas standing out:

Registered contracting services grew by 31%

Commercial SMS rose by 29%

We also continued to strengthen our financial position, reducing net debt by 7%, close to €500,000.

"We’re focusing on high-margin, standardised product lines, which now account for 48% of total sales,” explains Beatriz García, our Chief Business Officer. "It’s a key year for product development. We’ve rolled out new features that our clients have responded to enthusiastically".

'We aim to provide the legal foundation that safeguards our clients’ digital processes' - Beatriz Garcia, Chief Business Officer.

New solutions for our 30th anniversary

Responding to client needs, we’ve launched a suite of new tools in 2025. According to Carlos Rodriguez, EMEA Sales Director:

'We’ve created the perfect blend: a seamless user experience supported by robust, reliable technology.' - Carlos Rodriguez, EMEA Sales Director

One highlight is Click & Sign via WhatsApp, which makes it easier than ever to sign documents in everyday scenarios while verifying sender identity. We also introduced a new KYC process with liveness detection—a customisable, ready-to-deploy-in-48-hours tool that prevents identity fraud before it happens. It is fully compliant with SEPBLAC, AML/KYC, CTF, and eIDAS.

Click & Automate, our process automation platform, also continues to evolve, letting users design and manage workflows intuitively.

"These upgrades let us better align with real client needs and deliver value from day one.”

And it’s not just for large enterprises. More individuals are turning to our services for everyday legal certainty, whether to register a key communication or secure a quick digital signature. We’re here for all of them.

Lleida.net’s 30th Anniversary: A pioneering spirit that hasn’t faded

We’re proud to mark 30 years of a company that has never lost its entrepreneurial spark. The story of Lleida.net began, as many great tech stories do, almost by chance. In the mid-90s, a group of friends with a shared passion for amateur radio built what was then called a BBS, a rudimentary forerunner to today’s internet.

From that small, curious experiment, something remarkable grew.
They launched Lleida’s first internet service provider—a bold step that gave rise to the company we are today. Lleida.net was born out of curiosity, rooted in its local community but always looking outward.

As technology progressed, so did we. We moved from simple SMS services to become a European pioneer in the certification of electronic communications, both outgoing and incoming—a natural step into the world of secure digital contracting.

Since then, we’ve consistently evolved. We’ve built a broad portfolio of services and invested in developing our technology, enabling businesses and institutions to digitise critical processes—from communication to documentation—with speed, legal certainty, and peace of mind.

Today, we operate internationally and are listed on several stock exchanges.
We’re proud to be a reference in the digital trust space, and the only telecom operator that is also a qualified trust service provider authorised to issue digital certificates.

Celebrating 30 years—together

We’re celebrating this milestone with the same passion and curiosity that started it all. Lleida.net’s 30th anniversary is a celebration of innovation, resilience, and our commitment to digital trust.

To thank everyone who has joined us on this journey, we’re organising a series of commemorative events throughout the year. We’ll share highlights of our past, present, and, most importantly, our vision for the future.

Follow us on LinkedIn to stay up to date and be part of the celebration.

Thank you for being part of Lleida.net’s 30th anniversary celebration.

Guest Registration in Spain: Compliance with Royal Decree 933/2021

Guest Registration in Spain: Compliance with Royal Decree 933/2021

Guest registration in Spain is an essential process for all businesses in the tourism sector. Ensuring guest registration in Spain is accurate and complies with the law is critical for businesses and authorities alike. The guest registration process is regulated by Royal Decree 933/2021, which mandates that all accommodations and platforms report detailed guest information. These regulations aim to enhance security and prevent criminal activities.

What does Royal Decree 933/2021 mean for guest registration?

Royal Decree 933/2021 requires companies in the tourism sector to collect and manage up to 42 different pieces of information per guest. This data must be transmitted to the Ses.Hospedajes system, managed by the Ministry of the Interior.

What information is required by Royal Decree 933/2021?

Type of informationExample of data requestedPurpose according to the regulation
Personal DataName, surname, gender, ID document, nationality, date of birth.Unambiguous identification of the guest.
Contact InformationLandline, mobile phone, email.Communication in case of emergencies.
Booking InformationNumber of guests, relationship (for minors), check-in/out dates, payment details.Traceability of accommodation and booking process.
Additional DataFor vehicle rentals: GPS location, kilometres travelled.Security and prevention of related crimes.

Deadline for reporting data

The data must be reported within 24 hours and stored for three years for possible audits.

Who Does the Guest Registration Regulation Affect?

The regulation affects both companies and consumers in the tourism sector.

Companies Affected

  • Tourism providers:
    • Hotels, hostels, campsites, and any tourist accommodation.
    • Intermediary platforms like Airbnb, Booking, or travel agencies.
  • Transport companies:
    • Vehicle rentals without a driver.
    • Other activities related to tourist mobility.

Exceptions:
Private hosts conducting non-professional activities only need to report basic data.

Travellers

Every guest, whether travelling for leisure or business, must provide personal details. This includes:

  • MICE Tourism (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions): For example, if a group travels to a congress like MWC in Barcelona, each member must provide their individual details. This includes minors, whose relationship with accompanying adults must be specified.

Objectives and Criticisms of Royal Decree 933/2021

Objectives of Royal Decree 933/2021

According to the Ministry of the Interior, the regulation aims to enhance national security by preventing crimes linked to terrorism and organized crime. The real-time traceability of guest data is a key measure to achieve this.

The system has reportedly helped locate over 18,584 individuals with outstanding police warrants since its introduction.

Criticism of the Regulation

  • Administrative burden:
Manually managing 42 data points per client is challenging for high-turnover companies, especially during peak seasons.
  • GDPR concerns
Of the 42 data points, 23 involve personal or sensitive information. This raises concerns regarding data privacy and conflicts with GDPR’s principle of data minimisation, which requires that only necessary information be collected.
  • Economic impact:
Fines range from €100 to €30,000, adding pressure to a sector still recovering from the pandemic.

Operational Challenges for Guest Registration

  • Time-consuming manual processes:
Manually collecting and verifying data can significantly extend check-in times, creating queues and diminishing guest satisfaction.
  • Incomplete data:
Some documents, such as certain international passports, may not include all the required information.
  • Technology adoption:
Transmitting data to the Ses.Hospedajes system requires technological upgrades, which can be particularly demanding for small businesses.
